On the outside, Ellie and Paul are equally awkward teenagers; wallflowers set into the background living in a town that like them, recedes into the dull backyard of our hustling, happening cities. It is only because our camera is pointed at them that we even see Ellie and Paul. At first, there's Ellie, the introspective child whose mind has matured way beyond her years. We fall in love with her words, her melancholic and philosophical mind. We vouch for her. We even begin to dislike and chide Paul. He's just a big, dumb kid in her way to finding her one true love, Aster. But then, just as we are turning away, we give Paul another glance. There, we see a spark. Nothing unusual, nothing you wouldn't find in another kid his age if you looked closely enough. But that's the point. We haven't looked. The Pauls of the world have never had the words to express their volumes of emotions. They haven't even attracted the little bit of attention that Ellie might get from her written words. But our camera is going to change that. And thus the dance begins, between the sweet pensive words of Ellie and the charming, gentle silence of Paul. We sway to that beautiful unhurried tune. We realize we are only halfway through the film, yet we like this slowness. We can just live in it. Like Paul, this film is better expressed in the feelings that it imparts than any words I can use to express those feelings. All I can say is, this film is not a love story. Or perhaps it is more of a love story than any film has ever been.

Guy is in love (he thinks) with a girl and doesn't know what to do bout it and enlists a a girls help (whose also secretly crushing on the aforementioned girl) is how the story goes. This is were the movie differs, and thank Universe, with the way they're so relatable. Ultimately, it's bout self-discovery. Yeah, it's a love story but more importantly it's about self awakening. Being bold and stepping out of your comfort zone. For me Ellie's boldest move was not going to Grinell College but kissing Aster, and making a light promise to see her again. Paul's bold move is not when he decided to step up and, elevate their family's dying business, be his own man. His bold move is when he accepted the fact that Ellie is gay and that there's more ways to love someone. He chose to be best friends with Ellie even if his belief said that being gay is a sin. Aster's is not just saying no to what her parent's want and what is expected of her but her self acceptance. She believes in God, and hopes Ellie find one to believe in, but embraces the fact that deeply she knows she wants Ellie. She just needs to figure out herself first by starting with her dreams and what she actually want. It is a pretty much one-off movie but I really hope Alice Wu would think of something for a part 2.

I fell in love in this movie that I can't stop making memes about it and this is my new favorite movie. SEQUEL PLS.
